Korean Down Perm for Men & Women in Brooklyn

Calmer Hairlines & Cleaner Shapes — No Curl Added

A down perm is a Korean styling technique that softens and flattens hair that sticks out or is hard to control, especially along the sides, the hairline, and around the back of the head.

Instead of adding curl or wave, a down perm works with the natural direction of your hair to create a flatter, cleaner shape that is easier to style.

At Seoul Scissors in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, I customize the service for men and women to your haircut, your hair texture, and the shape you want. It is never a one-size-fits-all treatment.

The Essentials

Price: men’s 8-Down Perm from $80, women’s Partial Down Perm from $160 · see the Pricing page · By appointment only, no walk-ins.

The Basics

What Is a Down Perm?

A Korean down perm is different from a traditional perm that creates curls. The goal is control.

Many hairstyles look cleaner when the sides and hairline lie closer to the head. But some hair grows outward, gets puffy along the hairline, gets bulky around the temples, or refuses to stay flat even after styling.

A down perm reduces that unwanted volume so your hair sits closer to the head. That makes a haircut look more polished and makes everyday styling easier.

On my Pricing page the men’s version is listed as the 8-Down Perm and the women’s version as the Partial Down Perm. The women’s version is partial because I treat only the areas that need control instead of your whole head. The down perm is one technique within the broader Korean perm family — my Korean Perm Guide covers the full range, from curls and waves to volume and control.

The Technique

How a Down Perm Works

A traditional perm wraps hair around rods to create curls or waves. A down perm does the opposite. A perm solution is applied to the area that needs control, and the hair is set in the direction I want it to lie, so it sets flat instead of curling.

Because this is a chemical service, the condition of your hair matters. If your hair is very dry, damaged, or recently bleached, I will tell you whether to wait or take a different approach.

The hair that grows in after the service comes in with its natural pattern. That is why the result changes gradually over time, and why the service is aimed at specific areas instead of your whole head.

Good Fit

Who Is a Down Perm Good For?

A down perm can be a good fit if your hair:

  • Sticks out at the sides
  • Looks puffy along the hairline
  • Has strong or stubborn growth patterns
  • Becomes bulky around the temples
  • Is difficult to keep flat with styling products
  • Looks wider than you want after a haircut

It can also be combined with the right haircut to create a more balanced overall shape. And if what you want is the opposite — more wave and movement instead of less volume — that is the job of a Korean digital perm.

If you are not sure whether a down perm is right for your hair, send me a photo or book a consultation. I will tell you honestly whether you need the service, or whether the right haircut alone will get you the look.

Men

Down Perm for Men

For men, a down perm is a way to get a clean Korean-inspired shape without adding curl. It keeps the sides closer to the head so the haircut looks sharper and is easier to style.

It pairs well with a Two-Block Cut, where controlling the sides helps create the clean separation and shape the style is known for. It works just as well beyond the Two-Block — with the dandy cut, the leaf cut, or any Korean layered men’s cut where clean sides make the shape on top stand out. I plan the haircut and the down perm together so they work as one shape.

On my Pricing page this is the 8-Down Perm, starting at $80.

Women

Down Perm for Women

For women, a partial down perm calms a puffy hairline and areas where hair stands out, and it is paired with a haircut so the whole shape works together.

If your hair puffs up at the front or sides, or your layers do not sit the way you want, tell me where it gives you trouble. I will treat only that area and plan the cut around it. It pairs especially well with soft layered cuts like the hush cut and the butterfly cut, where a puffy hairline can hide the face framing. On my Pricing page this is the Partial Down Perm, starting at $160.

Your Visit

What to Expect at Your Appointment

  • 1. AssessmentI look at how your hair naturally grows, how much volume you have at the sides and hairline, your current haircut, and the condition of your hair before I decide how to do the service.
  • 2. Planning the shapeThe goal is not to make your hair as flat as possible. The goal is a shape that looks natural with your haircut and is easy for you to maintain.
  • 3. The serviceI apply the perm solution only to the areas that need control and set your hair in the direction it should lie.
  • 4. Shaping and stylingAfter processing, I shape and style your hair so you can see how the result works with your haircut. I also show you how to style it at home.
Longevity

How Long Does a Down Perm Last?

A down perm is not permanent. The result changes gradually as your hair grows and returns to its natural pattern.

How long it lasts depends on your hair texture, how fast your hair grows, how strongly it grows outward, and how the service is done.

Because the service controls specific areas instead of changing your whole head of hair, you only need to come back when natural growth starts to affect the shape again.

Honest Advice

Is a Down Perm Right for You?

A down perm is not necessary for every hairstyle. Sometimes the right haircut and styling technique are enough.

That is why the consultation matters. If your hair can get the look without a chemical service, I will tell you. If a down perm would make the shape easier to maintain, I will walk you through how to build it into the haircut.

The objective is always the same: the right technique for your hair, not simply adding another service.

Questions

Down Perm FAQ

Is a down perm only for men?

No. I do it for men and women. Men usually get it to keep the sides close to the head with a cut like the Two-Block. Women usually get a partial down perm to calm a puffy hairline or areas where hair stands out.

How much does a down perm cost?

The men’s 8-Down Perm starts at $80, and the women’s Partial Down Perm starts at $160. See the Pricing page for current prices.

How long does a down perm last?

It depends on your hair texture, growth rate, and how strongly your hair grows outward. The result fades gradually as your natural growth comes in.

Is a down perm permanent?

No. The hair that was treated stays flatter until it grows out. New hair at the roots grows in with its natural pattern, so you come back for a touch-up when that growth starts to affect the shape.

Does a down perm damage my hair?

It is a chemical service, so the condition of your hair matters. I check your hair before I start. If it is very dry, damaged, or recently bleached, I will tell you to wait or choose a different approach.

Will a down perm make my hair look flat or unnatural?

That is not the goal. The goal is to reduce volume where you do not want it, so the haircut looks cleaner and sits naturally. I do not flatten more than your haircut needs.

How long does the appointment take?

The time depends on your haircut and how much of your hair needs to be treated. I will confirm the timing when you book.

Do I need a down perm, or just a better haircut?

Sometimes the right haircut is enough. Send me a photo of your hair and the style you want, and I will tell you which it is.
