Korean Butterfly Cut in Brooklyn

Voluminous, Airy Layers That Flutter — Without Losing Your Length

The butterfly cut is a Korean-inspired layered haircut built around soft, face-framing layers that flip and flutter away from the face, with the length through the back kept intact.

The layers create bounce and movement through the front and mid-lengths while the back stays long — so you get the fullness of a shorter shape without giving up your length.

At Seoul Scissors in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, I customize the butterfly cut to your hair type, length, and face shape — and I will tell you honestly if it is the right cut for you.

The Cut

What Is a Butterfly Cut?

The butterfly cut is a layered haircut designed around face-framing layers that curve and flip outward at the front — the “wings” that give the style its name — while the hair through the back stays long.

The layers start high enough to create volume through the crown and mid-lengths, but they are blended so the longer lengths underneath keep their weight. A well-executed butterfly cut usually has:

  • Face-framing layers that flip and flutter
  • Volume through the crown and mid-lengths
  • Length preserved through the back
  • A soft, blended transition between lengths
  • Movement that works even when simply air-dried
  • A shape that looks styled without heavy effort

It is a good option if you want more volume and face-framing movement but are not ready to give up your length.

Know the Difference

Butterfly Cut vs. Hush Cut vs. Wolf Cut

These Korean-inspired layered cuts are often mentioned together, but each one is built around a different priority. All of them are expressions of the same foundation — see my full guide to the Korean layered haircut to understand how layer placement changes each style.

Butterfly Cut

Face-framing layers with volume through the front and mid-lengths. The back stays long. Built for airy, fluttering movement and kept length.

Hush Cut

Layers blended smoothly throughout for a soft, quiet shape. Less contrast, easier grow-out, and an understated finish.

Wolf Cut

Shorter layers at the crown with longer lengths through the back, more contrast, more texture, and a more dramatic overall shape.

Which One Is Yours?

If you are between two of these, bring a photo and I will tell you which direction fits your hair, your face shape, and how much styling you are willing to do.

Women

Butterfly Cut for Women

The butterfly cut works best on medium-length to long hair, where there is enough length for the face-framing layers to flutter while the back keeps its shape. It can:

  • Add volume to hair that sits flat through the top
  • Soften a one-length cut without removing length
  • Frame the face with soft, curved pieces
  • Create bounce through the mid-lengths
  • Reduce weight in thick hair while keeping the length
  • Look styled with minimal daily effort

I can also adjust where the wings start and how soft or defined the face framing is. If you like volume and movement but do not want the more dramatic contrast of a wolf cut, the butterfly cut is often the better fit.

Other Lengths

Pricing depends on length, density, and the amount of layering. See the Pricing page for current prices, or text me a photo for an honest quote.

Hair Type

Is a Butterfly Cut Good for Your Hair?

A butterfly cut is not automatically right for every hair type. The layers need to be designed around how your hair behaves.

Thick Hair

Thick hair benefits from weight removed in the right places so the layers flutter instead of getting bulky. If your hair is thick, dark, and straight, see my Asian Haircuts & Styling page too.

Fine Hair

Fine hair needs a more controlled approach so the layering keeps enough visual weight and the ends do not look thin. The wings may start slightly lower to preserve density.

Wavy or Curly Hair

Natural texture changes how the layers sit, so the same butterfly cut looks very different on wavy or curly hair than on straight hair. See my Curly Haircuts page for how I approach curly hair.

This is why a reference photo helps, but treat it as inspiration, not a template.

Choosing

How to Choose the Right Butterfly Cut

When deciding on a butterfly cut, think about three things:

  • How much length do you want to keep? The butterfly cut keeps the back long, but the face-framing layers can start at the chin, the collarbone, or lower. Where the wings start changes the whole balance of the shape.
  • How much volume do you want?More dramatic wings create visible flutter and crown volume. A subtler version keeps the movement closer to the face and the shape quieter.
  • How much styling do you want to do?The butterfly cut shows its wings best with a quick round-brush or blow-dry at the front. Tell me what your mornings look like and I will cut it to match.

I take all three into account before I decide how much layering your hair needs.

Maintenance

Styling and Maintenance

The face-framing layers of a butterfly cut are the first thing to soften as it grows out. To keep the wings defined, plan on regular trims — often just a quick refresh on the front pieces.

Before you leave, I will show you how to style it so it works with the time you actually have in the morning.

Pairing With a Perm

Butterfly Cut With a Perm

If your hair is naturally straight and you want the layers to flutter on their own, a Korean digital perm can add the soft wave that makes the wings move without daily styling. If your sides stick out or feel bulky instead, a down perm can reduce that volume. I plan the cut and any perm work together so the layers and texture work as one shape.

Bring Your Inspiration Photo

A reference photo is one of the easiest ways to show me the look you are imagining. Bring it to your appointment and I will look at:

  • Your current length
  • Hair density
  • Natural texture
  • Face shape
  • Where the wings should start
  • What can realistically be achieved with your hair

The goal is a butterfly cut that works on you, not a copy of someone else’s haircut.

Questions

Butterfly Cut FAQ

Will a butterfly cut make me lose my length?

The back stays long. The layers are concentrated at the front and through the mid-lengths, so most of your length is preserved. If maximum length is important to you, tell me and I will plan the layer placement around it.

What is the difference between a butterfly cut and a wolf cut?

Both are layered Korean-inspired cuts. A butterfly cut keeps the back long and focuses on face-framing layers with airy volume, while a wolf cut has shorter crown layers, more contrast, and a more dramatic overall shape.

Does a butterfly cut work on straight hair?

Yes. On straight hair the wings are created through the cut itself, and a quick blow-dry at the front makes them flutter. If you want movement without styling, a soft perm can be paired with the cut.

Is a butterfly cut good for fine hair?

It can be, with a more controlled approach so the layering keeps enough visual weight. I adjust where the wings start and how much hair is removed so the ends do not look thin.

Can I get a butterfly cut with bangs?

Often yes. Soft, wispy bangs or curtain bangs pair naturally with the face-framing layers, depending on your hair and face shape.

How much does a butterfly cut cost?

Butterfly / soft layers starts at $75+. Pricing for other lengths depends on the cut and your hair. See the Pricing page for current prices.
