Gray Coverage & Gray Blending in Brooklyn
Natural-Looking Color for Gray Coverage, Blending & Root Touch-Ups
Gray hair is different for everyone. Some clients want complete coverage and a consistent, polished color. Others want to soften the contrast between their natural gray and their existing color without covering everything. Some just want their roots refreshed between larger services.
At Seoul Scissors, gray coverage and blending are customized to your natural color, percentage of gray, hair condition, lifestyle, and the result you want. The goal isn’t to make everyone look the same — it’s a color that looks natural, works with your features, and fits how you want to wear your hair.
With more than 25 years of experience, Nicole takes the time to understand what you’re looking for before choosing the approach.
Which Approach?
Gray Coverage or Gray Blending?
Gray Coverage
Covers gray more completely for a consistent overall color — the right approach if you want uniform color, maximum coverage, a consistent look from roots to ends, and regular root maintenance. Customized to look natural, not overly dark or flat.
Gray Blending
Softens the contrast between gray and pigmented hair instead of eliminating every gray hair — more dimensional, a softer grow-out transition, less obvious regrowth, and a way to gradually embrace your gray.
Neither is automatically right for everyone — it depends on what you want your hair to look like.

Color works with the haircut — a modern cut helps gray coverage or blending look even more natural.
The Challenge
Why Gray Coverage Can Be Tricky
Gray hair doesn’t always behave like pigmented hair — texture can differ, and some gray is more resistant to color, so consistent coverage isn’t a matter of applying one color and waiting. Your natural color, amount and distribution of gray, texture, and color history all shape the formula, which is why gray coverage starts with an assessment, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Gray also isn’t evenly distributed — it’s often concentrated around the temples, hairline, part line, crown, or front sections, and where it’s concentrated affects how the service is approached.
Maintenance
How Often Will I Need Gray Coverage?
More regular than balayage, since new growth shows at the roots. How often you return depends on hair growth rate, how much gray you have, where it’s concentrated, how much regrowth you’re comfortable seeing, and your personal maintenance routine. Some clients maintain consistently; others are fine with visible regrowth between appointments — your schedule should fit your life, not the other way around.
Gray blending can soften that grow-out further, since some natural gray stays incorporated into the look — it doesn’t eliminate maintenance, it just changes how the regrowth reads.
Going Gray
Transitioning Toward Natural Gray
Some clients decide they’d rather stop covering all their gray, or want to go fully gray and make the process look intentional. If you’ve been coloring your hair regularly for years, the existing color can’t disappear overnight — the transition may involve highlights, low-maintenance color, gray blending, toners, a gradual reduction of permanent color, and multiple appointments. A consultation is where we map out the most realistic path for your hair.
Hair Health
Gray Coverage & Hair Health
If your hair has been colored repeatedly, lightened, or chemically treated, that history matters when planning a new service. If your hair needs attention before a larger color change, you’ll be told honestly — sometimes the right move is to do less now and build toward the result over time.
Dimension
Gray Coverage Doesn’t Have to Look Flat
Full coverage doesn’t have to mean one solid block of color — dimension can be added through carefully selected tones, highlights, or lowlights so the result has depth and movement instead of a uniform shade.
If you want more dimensional color, explore our Balayage & Highlights services.
Your Shade
Choosing Your Color
Your finished shade can be based on natural color, skin tone, existing color, amount of gray, desired maintenance, warm/cool/neutral tone preference, and how much root-to-end contrast you want. Staying close to your natural color is the most believable result for some clients; for others, gray coverage is a chance to change their overall color. The consultation determines the right starting point.
Toner & Gloss
Starting at $60
Refreshes tone and adds shine alongside other color services.

What Happens During Your Consultation?
We’ll discuss how much gray you want covered (complete, partial, or a softer blend), your existing color, your desired result (bring photos), your maintenance preferences, and your hair condition — building a plan that works for both your hair and your life.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What’s the difference between gray coverage and gray blending?
Coverage aims to cover gray more completely; blending softens the contrast between gray and pigmented hair while leaving some gray visible.
How often do I need gray coverage?
Depends on growth rate, how much gray you have, where it appears, and how much regrowth you’re comfortable seeing.
Can men get natural-looking gray coverage?
Yes — customized to reduce the appearance of gray without an obviously colored result.
Can I transition from full coverage to natural gray?
Yes, but the process depends on your existing color — a gradual transition is usually better than removing years of color at once.
Can I cover gray and still have highlights?
Yes — gray coverage can often be combined with highlights or other dimensional techniques.
Can you correct gray coverage done somewhere else?
Possibly — color correction needs an assessment of the existing color and hair condition at a consultation.
